Alain Arnaud
Artiste peintre, sculpteur et poète, Alain Arnaud est né en Provence et commence à écrire dès l'âge de 15 ans. Il étudie pendant trois ans aux Beaux-Arts d'Avignon, période qui fut l'une des plus heureuses de sa vie, puis à Paris grâce à l'appui de son professeur, qui convainc ses parents de le laisser étudier à Paris. Mais très vite il se sent dans un carcan, sa liberté de création est contrariée : à la fin de la première année, il quitte l'école et ne présente pas l'examen. Il ne dira rien à ses Parents. Pendant deux ans, il mène une vie de liberté en dessinant et créant des poèmes. Une nouvelle intervention de son professeur auprès de ses parents ne put les convaincre et ils refusèrent qu'il suive cette vie d'artiste, lui coupant les vivres : il coupera les ponts avec sa famille. Il ne les reverra jamais et refusera trente ans plus tard leur héritage, qu'il laissera à son frère. Il plonge alors dans une vie d'aventure, mais ses angoisses le portent vers la boisson : il vit une vie de bohème, mais trouve toujours à être hébergé. Il rencontre alors des poètes et des peintres, en particulier le Gérard Magnet, qui sera son ami et qui lui permettra de rencontre la femme de sa vie à 28 ans : Régina.
Lorsqu’il était SDF et à une période où il était au plus bas physiquement et moralement, Régina l’héberge. Mais cette vie commune ne peut durer car devenant fou de jalousie et violent, elle doit lui demander de quitter leur appartement. Alors recommence pour lui une nouvelle période de vie errante. Il pense renoncer, retourner chez ses parents mais il constate alors que sa foi en lui-même et en sa création est devenue indestructible et il sait que sa vie sera consacrée à son œuvre.
Le soir même, dans un bistrot, il rencontre quelqu'un qui lui indique l'adresse d'un bureau de placement, où il trouve un poste de serveur dans un café de Montparnasse et à partir de ce jour, il commence à gagner de quoi vivre et croque les touristes à Pigalle et à Montmartre. Il réussit à trouver un logement et enfin se remettre à la peinture.
Il fait partie du paysage de Montparnasse et un patron de restaurant lui achète plusieurs tableaux qu'il accroche dans sa salle. On lui propose d'exposer ses œuvres dans un autre café. Le peintre et ami Gérard Magnet, qu'il a perdu de vue, reconnaît alors ses œuvres, se renseigne et le retrouve. Son ami organise une nouvelle rencontre entre Régina et Alain : ils reprennent leur vie commune. Et alors qu'Alain Arnaud a encore perdu toutes ses oeuvres suite à un conflit avec son logeur qui les lui a subtilisé, Régina décide de trouver une maison de campagne pour qu'Alain puisse créer : ils emménagent à Montreuil-sur-Brêche pour une vie commune, qui durera trente-sept ans, jusqu'à la mort de Régina.
Dans tout ce qu'il crée, c'est lui-même qu'il exprime : "Ma peinture, c'est ma réalité intérieure. Ma peinture, c'est la chair de ce qu'on ne voit pas."
Painter, sculptor and poet, Alain Arnaud was born in Provence and began writing at the age of 15. He studied for three years at the Beaux-Arts d'Avignon, a period that was one of the happiest of his life, then in Paris thanks to the support of his teacher, who convinced his parents to let him study in Paris. But very quickly he felt he was in a straitjacket, his creative freedom was thwarted: at the end of the first year, he left the school and did not take the exam. He did not tell his parents anything. For two years, he leads a life of freedom by drawing and creating poems. A new intervention of his teacher with his parents could not convince them and they refused to let him follow this life of artist, cutting him off: he will cut the bridges with his family. He never saw them again and thirty years later refused their inheritance, which he left to his brother. He then plunged into a life of adventure, but his anxieties led him to drink: he lived a bohemian life, but always found a place to stay. He met poets and painters, in particular Gérard Magnet, who became his friend and who allowed him to meet the woman of his life at the age of 28: Régina.
When he was homeless and at a time when he was at his lowest point physically and morally, Regina took him in. But this common life cannot last because becoming mad of jealousy and violent, she must ask him to leave their apartment. Then starts again for him a new period of wandering life. He thinks of giving up and returning to his parents, but then he realizes that his faith in himself and in his creation has become indestructible and he knows that his life will be devoted to his work.
That same evening, in a bistro, he met someone who gave him the address of an employment agency, where he found a job as a waiter in a café in Montparnasse. From that day on, he began to earn a living and to mug tourists in Pigalle and Montmartre. He managed to find a place to live and finally started to paint again.
He became part of the landscape of Montparnasse and a restaurant owner bought several paintings from him which he hung in his room. He was offered to exhibit his work in another café. The painter and friend Gérard Magnet, whom he had lost sight of, recognized his works, made inquiries and found him. His friend organized a new meeting between Regina and Alain: they resumed their life together. And while Alain Arnaud still lost all his works following a conflict with his landlord who took them away from him, Regina decides to find a country house so that Alain can create: they move to Montreuil-sur-Brêche for a common life, which will last thirty-seven years, until the death of Regina.
In all that he creates, it is himself that he expresses: "My painting, it is my interior reality. My painting, it is the flesh of what one does not see."
